October Message

Our next PTO Meeting will be on Wednesday, October 3rd at 6:00 pm in the CMS Library. We will be reviewing our budget and updating our committees. Mrs. Lozier will also be speaking about the Positivity Project.  If you haven't joined the PTO yet, you can get the form by clicking here. Just send it in to school with your child.

Picture Retake Day is coming! If you missed picture day back in September or if you were unhappy with your first photo shoot, our photographer will be back in the building on Friday, October 26th. Please bring your old photos to exchange at the retake session.

Our Halloween Dance and Open Gym will be Friday, October 26th, from 6:00-8:00 PM. Tickets are $5 at the door and all proceeds benefit our PTO. Come celebrate the holiday with your favorite friends and ghouls!! No costumes please!

The Positivity Project continues to be a terrific way to welcome our students back from the weekend. Every Monday, during the extended homeroom period, our teachers are delivering the incredible resources that have been created by the founders of P2. It is so encouraging to watch how our students interpret each character strength in their daily interactions with their classmates. Having a common vocabulary anchors our conversations across the weeks and grade levels. You can help at home by picking up that conversation when students come home. You can view what are known as the Character Cards for the four traits (open mindedness, integrity, perspective and creativity) we will cover in the month of October by clicking here. The cards include a description of what the trait means, a few quotes, and some reflections on how individuals might express each trait. These are quick reads that will really help strengthen our commitment to P2! Remember: Other People Matter. Period.

September Message

Dear CMS Families,

“I can sum up positive psychology in just three words - Other People Matter. Period. Anything that builds relationships between and among people is going to make you happy.” Dr. Chris Peterson
On Monday of this week, CMS kicked off the Positivity Project (P2) to great success. This is our third year participating in P2, and every school in the district is now a partner school. This allows the program to have a real impact on students since the P2 ideals evolve throughout a student’s whole school career. As a reminder, P2 focuses on 24 character strengths that research has proven to build powerful behaviors and increase our ability to live in a positive-mindset manner. Once a student learns the meaning of each strength and what it looks like, they can then be embedded into the curriculum in every subject area. The character strengths become a part of a common language that we use to build ourselves and each other up every single day. Every Monday morning we will extend homeroom for 15 minutes so that we can have meaningful discussions about each of the character traits and view the outstanding resources that the Positivity Project creators have assembled.

We know that families are eager to partner with our school in increasing your child’s character strengths. By using the character strengths vocabulary and having discussion about the concepts, you will help your child understand each character in themselves and others in a more complete way. You can view the calendar of when we study each trait by clicking here. Look for the Character Trait Summary Card in the Curriculum Night mailing that you will receive soon. That's a great thing to keep on the fridge!

You can view the opening video that we saw in homeroom right here. If you have a few minutes to view it with your child I am sure it will be a great prompt for a discussion about your thoughts on the topic.

I look forward to our journey with P2...it’s what really matters.

June Message

PTO

We Need You! We have several important positions open. We promise that they don’t require a great deal of time, and we can also promise you will have help. Here is what we need:
Treasurer: The busiest time of the year will be in the fall when PTO membership season is in full swing. Updating the budget spreadsheet and cutting checks are the other main responsibilities.
Book Fair Chairperson: Our Book Fair occurs in September. We need somebody to coordinate with the Scholastic representative and recruit volunteers who can work during the school day when the Fair is open.
Dance Chairperson: We have two dances each year, October and March. We need somebody who will purchase the candy that we sell at the dance and organize the chaperones who will sign up to help.
If you are interested in any of these positions or want to ask some questions, please contact our president Pearlene Amica at pearlene.amica@gmail.com or our principal Beth Lozier at 315-672-3159. THANK YOU!

Grade 8 Celebration
On June 21st our 8th graders will celebrate as a class with a short presentation from the PTO Scholarship winners from our graduating class followed by a breakfast and party. This event is for students only and is always a fun way for them to end their middle school years. Students will go home at dismissal (10:10 am). They received a flyer with all the details.

We are more than half-way through learning about the 24 character traits that are the foundation of the Positivity Project (P2). I hope you are following us on Twitter (@camillusmiddle) so that you can stay up-to-date with what character trait we are studying each week. I Tweet it out each Monday morning, but you can also access the calendar for the rest of the year here. This past week, as we celebrated Valentine’s Day, we took a deep dive into the trait of love. I thought you might be interested in seeing an example of the resources that The Positivity Project supplied for us on this topic. I was impressed by the focus of the materials for love as seen in the video clip from the well-known movie Brian’s Song, which tells the story of the friendship between Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers of the Chicago Bears. I clearly remember watching the movie when I was in middle school (in 1970 something…I try not to do the math). The movie follows the trajectory of their relationship from teammates, to roommates, to friends played out against the tumultuous time period in our nation’s history. Their unlikely friendship ultimately becomes a profoundly loving one because each possesses the character traits we are studying this year: open mindedness, kindness, teamwork and bravery. I am not sure if that movie is available for streaming, but it would be worth watching again because its message stands the test of time.

We have just been so impressed, each and every week, with the quotes, videos, and discussion starters from P2.  We use them as a way to directly teach about the character traits and open the conversation about how students can recognize each of them in themselves and others. Our teachers are reporting back about how aware our students are and about the connections they are making to not only their daily experience here at school but also outside our walls. P2 is giving them some really important things to think about with a strong call to action. The entire experience has reminded us that we need to continue to set high expectations for kids, and we need to be deliberate in how WE model the character traits. We sometimes forget that middle level students are capable of reflective thinking…we need to give them the prompts to do it regularly.

As educators, we always look at the research base of any type of program we implement here at school. We always want to know how effective something is before we even consider if it will be worth our time. P2 is so powerful because it is based on the clinical research by Martin Seligman, Ph.D. His book, Learned Optimism, was groundbreaking at the time it was published (1990…I was in graduate school…let’s skip the math) because he wrote about “explanatory style.” Essentially this means that the story we tell ourselves about how the world works and our place in it is critical, especially when we need to be resilient. I highly recommend the book because it has great suggestions for parents and is highly readable.

I hope you all enjoy Winter Recess…hopefully this warm spell will stay with us.
We Celebrate Learning!
